ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the assumption that the publisher controls all rights. The major subsidiary rights cover the following general areas: book club; reprint; first serial; dramatic, including motion picture, television, and stage; and foreign, including British. Book-club rights are those licensed to clubs to enable them to offer their members the publisher's book. Foreign rights are those licensed to foreign-language and British book and periodical publishers to be translated and published in other countries throughout the world. The languages that most publishers deal with on a continuing basis are English, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. If a book appeals to a paperback publisher, he or she may telephone the rights director and try to acquire it on a pre-emptive basis, precluding other bids. Depending on the basic contract with the publisher and the rights involved, the author will have either no approval on any of the licenses, consultation rights, or formal approval.
