ABSTRACT

The most important association in the children's book field, to which more then sixty publishers belong, is the Children's Book Council. As new developments occur in audiovisual technology and home entertainment centers become more common, children's books will probably play a significant role in family programming. Children's-book publishing does possess certain distinct characteristics that set it off from other types of publishing and make it unique. In larger firms that publish fifty to one hundred or more new children's books each year, the juvenile department may have its own production manager, along with several production and art assistants. The director of school and library promotion is responsible for the children's-book advertising, catalogs, review copies, free materials, and exhibits budgets. In some large houses, a sales manager is assigned to concentrate exclusively on children's books, but in most houses one sales department services both the adult and children's trade lists.
