ABSTRACT

The production process—converting an author's manuscript into a book—is central to the publishing process. Parameters of the production process are established by the author's intentions, as revealed by the form and content of the manuscript, and the publisher's intentions, as revealed by the plans for the book's sale and distribution. All of the production functions—planning, designing, estimating, scheduling, purchasing materials, and selecting and supervising suppliers—require a certain amount of technical knowledge that must be obtained through hands-on experience and the study of information that is too detailed to cover except in summary fashion. Impact typography uses a relief matrix to strike an impression of each character onto paper through an ink or carbon ribbon. The set widths of various typefaces vary considerably; the selection of a text typeface will largely determine the setting length of a book, a major factor in production cost.
