ABSTRACT

Mr Peter Schutz, Chairman of the famous sports car manufacturer Porsche gave a speech at the German-American Chamber of Commerce in New York. Most Japanese companies in Germany try to fill management vacancies via newspaper advertising. Japanese management in Germany often has only vague ideas concerning the professional experience and personnel traits of first class German management talent, because via newspaper advertising the chance to interview such top candidates is very limited. Japanese managers in Germany have great difficulties in interviewing candidates for a vacancy in their company. Japanese managers tend to overrate candidates coming from a competitor. The Japanese managers tend to concentrate on their own ethnic group in the organisation and often neglect the basic needs of the local management in respect of communication and motivation. English-speaking Japanese managers in Germany only seldom have reliable contact with those employees who do not speak English.
