ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the various aspects of the Cyprus problem using key headings of the SWORD model. The introduction of United Nations "peacekeeping" forces into Cyprus was the result of in-depth negotiations among the UN Secretary-General, the guarantee powers and both Cypriot communities. The Cyprus problem has confounded the participants and the international community for over 30 years. The United Kingdom has been a strong third party actor in the Cyprus problem. In attempts to resolve the Cyprus political problem, there have been notable and long term efforts by the international community. Regional events involving Greece and Turkey, such as Presidential elections, were interpreted for their political impact on Cyprus. United Nations Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP) initially deployed to Cyprus with a robust military force of approximately 6000 personnel with military contingents from Austria, Canada. Perhaps the only area where UNFICYP has achieved significant praise with all entities has been in the humanitarian sphere.
