ABSTRACT

The surface navy is leading the way in the uses of new technology. At the end of World War II, the US Navy was supreme on the world’s oceans. The United States had come out of the war with the largest, most technologically advanced and sophisticated fleet in the world. The Soviets were building their fleet into a capable and increasingly sophisticated navy. Amphibious warfare is, of course, the reason for being of our growing fleet of more than 60 amphibious ships. Properly laid mines can bottle-up and neutralize much of the Soviet fleet. If the arrival of the Soviet aircraft carrier presents the temptation for a new era of belligerence at sea, the burden of countering it will fall on the US Navy and on the surface forces in particular. The surface forces are most apt to be involved first.
