ABSTRACT

Volunteers are the backbone of the sports industry. No sport event or sport programme can be successfully hosted or implemented without the time and services provided by volunteers. Developments in technology and travel have resulted in a changing landscape for the international sports industry and have, as a result, contributed to a paradigm shift in how the sports volunteer is conceptualised. This chapter acknowledges this shift by first exploring sport volunteer typologies and the factors that drive them, followed by an identification of the current realities and challenges faced by the sport manager in managing volunteers. The chapter concludes with practical suggestions on volunteer management in this changed landscape.
