ABSTRACT

This chapter provides insight into the use of low-budget, active, and experiential learning strategies in order to create engaged, powerful learning environments. Budget, budget cuts, low budget: these are words that many educators find intimidating, frustrating, and defeating, but they are commonplace in secondary and higher education. Team-building games can be useful for demonstrating or allowing students to experience various aspects of topics or concepts, such as mindset, mental toughness, communication, stress/pressure, goal setting, leadership, and team cohesion. Inspiration from other children’s and adult games are excellent ways to facilitate engagement in the classroom, again with little to no cost or extra supplies. Creating an engaging, powerful learning environment in the classroom is essential for effective learning and future application of one’s learning. Theory and research support the use of active and experiential activities in the classroom that can and should incorporate a wide array of creative approaches.
