ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how the authors developed an online experiential learning space for a practicum course using a video-sharing platform and videoconferencing. This format demanded the instructors provide more structure and deliberately model critique, which differed from in-person experiential courses. Providing meaningful feedback in addition to modeling the behaviors of critique through video comments helps set expectations and provides instructor presence that is often missing in an online course. This structure provides the students with ongoing feedback from both peers and instructors. Facilitation of discussion is an essential part of reflective observation and building a community of learners. Reflection papers in an online environment can help students tie everything together, think critically through work they are doing, and help create a learning narrative. The chapter concludes with a discussion of lessons-learned from iteratively revising the course.
