ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses transformational leadership theory and how college professors can demonstrate this type of leadership with their students. More specifically, it presents readers with concrete ideas for exhibiting the four essential characteristics of transformational leadership (idealized influence, inspirational motivation, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation) in classroom settings. The chapter also presents examples of how professors can extend their leadership into their wider on- and off-campus communities. Popular definitions conceptualize leadership as the process through which individuals organize, influence, and motivate individuals or groups to achieve a shared goal. While understanding the characteristics and benefits of transformational leadership is an important and necessary foundation to build upon, it is not terribly practical. The best tool for measuring transformational leadership is the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Professors are intellectual leaders of the discipline they belong to and that leadership extends into the classroom. As part of their preparation, professors should consider developing their leadership skills and style.
