ABSTRACT

This chapter describes each of the 14 VALUE rubrics and provides ways to assess the student learning outcomes needed to demonstrate competence in critical thinking, quantitative literacy, civic engagement, ethical reasoning, and 12 more areas. To streamline the assessment process, the chapter provides teaching activities and exercises for each of the VALUE rubrics along with links to additional information and assessment methods. Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) developed VALUE rubrics to assess 14 fundamental learning outcomes that reflect nation-wide expectations for essential learning outcomes. The VALUE rubric for assessing teamwork is designed to measure the quality of the process, rather than the quality of the end product. The SENCER program (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) promotes the teaching of science through addressing important, unresolved civic issues. The rubrics provide instructors with grading mechanisms that are valid and reliable and can be utilized in providing feedback to students on a wide range of class assignments.
