ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates several important findings regarding the radiographic examination of mummified remains. The radiographs were also valuable in localizing a pin and button for recovery and analysis. Knowledge of radiographic history and fundamentals made it possible to incorporate the Polaroid system into the study to determine the required exposure setting and produce diagnostic quality radiographs. The most significant finding was that the mummy was not only real but also in an incredible state of preservation as demonstrated, even on the plane radiographs, by the liver and brains. Plane radiographs are extremely helpful in forming first impressions regarding the condition and preliminary findings, such as age at the time of death and presence of skeletal pathologies. The 3D image of the interior of the skull prepared by the radiographer in 2006 provided a great starting point to investigate the embalming procedure.
