ABSTRACT

In many ways, open learning contrasts with traditional 'closed' class or group-based systems. Centre-based systems operate by having learning materials and teaching based at a college, or some other education centre, but allowing the learner to choose the time and pace of his study. Many open learning providers operate a mixture of systems to suit the needs of different groups of learners. Studying on an open learning basis with a tutor's support and guidance enables them to work through a course without the stress of joining a group. Several open learning schemes funded by the Home Office are being developed within the prison education service. Wide-ranging recommendations of the Herewood Open Tech project seek to improve and extend open learning opportunities for people with disabilities. The quality handbook contains a code of practice which is intended for managers, deliverers and producers of open learning. Modern technology, particularly high-quality videos, is used in most Open College learning packages.
