ABSTRACT

This chapter contrasts the way the term “nationalism” is understood by contemporary Ukrainians with the way it is used in the official Russian media. Seven meanings of the term are examined: nationalism as national solidarity, as belief in a shared history, as support for a common language, as ethnic/racial/national exclusivity, as fascism, as renewal of Second World War mythmaking, and as rejection of the international community and support for the far-right. The contradictory nature of these concepts as used in Putin-inspired propaganda is analyzed.
