ABSTRACT

The main Ukrainian newspaper in the Polish-ruled interwar Galicia (Halychyna) was the Lviv-based Dilo (Deed). A beacon of democratic journalism in troubled times, it was edited by Vasyl Mudryi of the Ukrainian National Democratic Alliance (UNDO). In 1933–34, it provided extensive reporting on developments in Soviet Ukraine, in particular of the Great Famine (Holodomor), Western coverage the tragedy, and attempts by various social, religious and political groups to draw attention to what was occurring. This paper examines the press coverage with reference to the political situation in Galicia in the 1930s.
