ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a description of the criminal justice system in Bangladesh, discusses the issues of the criminal justice system, and concludes by highlighting the new trends in crime. It focuses on the structures and functions of three subsystems, namely police, courts, and corrections. The village leaders tried to find an amicable solution for the disputant parties in both criminal and civil matters. The judiciary administers the criminal courts and sentencing. The police play a vital role in the adjudication process governed by the Code of Criminal Procedure and Special Powers Act of the land. In assessing the state of jails in Bangladesh, the German Society for International Cooperation observed: “the country’s prisons are severely overcrowded. Crime has been a major concern in Bangladesh since its independence in 1971. There has been an increase in crime, especially violent crime, and a breakdown of law and order in Bangladesh.
