ABSTRACT

During its long history, the Finnish sports system has faced many challenges and made many idiosyncratic decisions compared to other Nordic countries. This chapter focuses on the Finnish sports system and its reform from 2008 to 2017 by analysing how the key factors of the Nordic sports model were considered during the process. The analysis was based both on the previous research concerning the reforms of the Finnish sports system and archival data. The Nordic sports model were used as the analytical framework. The analysis summarized that the earlier conceptualization of the Finnish sports system as a mixed model of the state and sports movement is still valid. In addition, the system has taken steps towards individualism and market-oriented operations.
