ABSTRACT

This chapter contains a brief patient manual for the Socratic method. This can be used either for self-help purposes or to enhance work that is being done with a therapist. The focus of this chapter is on teaching the key principles from this book in a quick and easily understandable manner. The Self-Socratic Method is a method for mentally taking a step back and learning to examine your thoughts and behaviors using Socratic strategies. Individuals are taught the following: how to choose which thoughts to focus on; how to come to better understand the context in which that thought developed; how to expand their perspective through the use of curiosity and scientific thinking; and finally how to pull all the steps together to develop and foster new perspectives that will help people overcome the barriers in their lives.
