ABSTRACT

This chapter details the final step of the four-step Socratic-questioning framework. This step involves pulling all the information together to develop a new perspective that is balanced and therefore more durable. Clinicians will also be taught how to help the client synthesize the new perspective with their larger belief system to help bring about larger changes in core beliefs and cognitive schema. Emphasis is also placed upon using changes in cognition to drive changes in behavior. Contextual factors are an important part of this step. The goal is to help the patient take a look at the big picture that includes the context of how the thought was developed, how it shaped their behavior and environment, and the pieces of the picture they were missing. This broad look helps the individual create new thoughts that are balanced and durable. Paralleling other step-specific chapters the reader is provided with the rationale for this step, step-specific strategy, and procedural instructions specific to this step. This chapter contains several examples emphasizing this step in application.
