ABSTRACT

Climate Justice Montreal (CJM) is a grassroots group pursuing environmental and climate justice through education, mobilization, and direct action in solidarity with frontline communities. The climate justice movement in Canada has been recently reinvigorated by Powershift: Young and Rising. CJM was formed at the first Power Shift Canada conference in 2009 in the lead-up to the Copenhagen climate negotiations. The CJM Youth Mob are organizing actively as part of the Canada-wide Youth Rising network. CJM’s Youth Mob helped with planning of the March 15 largest ever climate strike and march in Montreal, and have been working hard to centre Indigenous rights and anti-racism in the action messaging. The words “climate justice” were there, hand-painted on placards, and climate justice slogans were being chanted loudly and urgently. Unlike more mainstream environmental groups and organizations in Montreal which focus mostly on environmental issues, CJM holds at the core of our work a commitment to solidarity, decolonization, and anti-oppression.
