ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses journalism in the digital age while providing an overall introduction to the core themes and values that will be discussed throughout the text. Although terms like “convergence” and “new media” no longer resonate as they once did, the concept of reaching an audience with a message on whatever platform best benefits it remains a crucial aspect of journalism. As the aperture opens more widely to allow anyone with an internet connection to provide content, trained and honest journalists remain a valuable and necessary commodity. The chapter discusses the importance of consumer demands, source credibility and storytelling in the field today. The goal of using the right tool for the right job to best reach the audience in a way they will accept sits at the center of this book’s ideology and this chapter serves to launch the text under that premise.
