This chapter focuses on how social media can help students become a better journalist. It examines some professional uses of social media in the journalism environment. The chapter highlights the ways to produce news content with social media. It discusses the importance of engaging with audiences seeking news on various media platforms, while also providing tips on how students can build community interactions and relationships with those readers. The chapter outlines the ways in which social media and an increasing reliance on digital technology have led to massive changes in how we work in journalism and how society engages with our field. Social media also allows citizens to capture live events with mobile devices and then stream them live or upload the information to social sites. Students create user-generated content regularly when students post status updates on social network sites or upload visual content to these sites.
