ABSTRACT

This chapter explores why information graphics are powerful storytelling tools and the role of the graphics reporter in creating them. It examines several types of information graphics, including maps, charts, diagrams, data visualizations and more. The chapter describes some time considering the value of visual reporting skills in our data-rich information age. It also examines to understand the importance of usability and user experience testing to ensure that the graphics that we create make sense to our audiences. Instead of written explanations that accompany the illustrations, narrative graphics use audio voiceover for most of the descriptive content. Graphics can illustrate intricate processes and charts can use simple visual metaphors to represent hundreds of data points in a single frame. So, a good graphics reporter will make sure that the design, functionality and overall structure of a graphic enhances memorability of the content Effectiveness refers to whether users can achieve their goals accurately when engaged with graphic.
