ABSTRACT

Seismic isolation is one of the most effective options for passive protection of structures. In this paper, the effectiveness of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) based Natural Rubber Bearing (NRB) with Double Cross (DC) SMA wire configuration is presented. Based on the aspect ratio (R) two types of DC-SMA NRBs are considered:(DC-SMA NRB-I has R = 0.22 and DC-SMA NRB-II has R = 0.38). The SMA based bearings show high strength-strain capacity, high resistance to corrosion and fatigue. In this study, FeNiCoAlTaB SMA wire of 2.5mm radius is provided to NRB. The strain in DC-SMA wire based NRB is evaluated through analytical method. The results are compared with available results of straight configuration [Choi et al.2005] and cross configuration [Dezfuli and Alam, 2013].
