ABSTRACT

In the neoliberal landscape of Argentina in the 1990s, the TV series The Nanny was a ratings success, right up to the point that a local version was commissioned; La Niñera (2004) which became a national hit. This success was followed with the Argentinean remake of Married with Children (1987–1997), a series that had gone unnoticed in its original version. Casados con Hijos (2005), Argentina’s version of Married with Children, was so successful that reruns are still aired today. La Niñera faithfully followed its American counterpart, while Casados con Hijos created a narrative of its own, oscillating between the disintegration of family values and the conservative nature of native comedies. These oscillations, however, began with The Nanny, a series that marked a transition to new ideological national paradigms within the country.
