ABSTRACT

Common millet or Proso millet or Cheena or French Millet is also called hog millet, broom corn millet or harshey millet. It is warm season grass capable of producing seeds 60–90 days after sowing. Leaf spot has been reported as one of the serious diseases of proso millet. Seed infection results in rotting, spot on coleoptile and seedling blight. The spots may coalesce under rapid disease progression stage and cause blighting. Symptoms can also be observed on culm, leaf sheath, and leaf blade. Head Smut disease is widely prevalent in millet growing areas in Europe and Asia. The affected plants are much taller and green compared to healthy plants. Smut sori first become evident at the time of panicles emergence. Udbatta disease is very common in kodo millet and foxtail millet. The most characteristic symptoms of the disease are that the diseased panicles are transformed into a compact ‘Agarbatti’ like structure, hence named “Udabatta.”.
