ABSTRACT

Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) belongs to the family Fabaceae is an important pulse crop commercially grown in India. It is two to four meter tall depending upon variety and lives for about five years. Pigeon pea is believed to have originated in India. Besides food crop, it is also cultivated as a green manure crop, cover crop, inter crop, etc., in many sustainable farming systems. Pigeon pea is susceptible to a number of dreaded diseases suffering heavy losses in yield. Among the various diseases of pigeon pea is one of the serious diseases in the major pigeonpea growing states in India such as UP, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra causing heavy loss in yield. The disease generally attacks young plants of five to six weeks old. Wilting of seedlings and adult plants is the characteristic symptom of the disease. Premature yellowing of the leaves is the typical and first symptom of the disease.
