ABSTRACT

It is known that Sulfate is one of chemical elements in tidal water that may damage submerged roads pavement, however, how much the impact required further analysis. This study aims to evaluate the durability of asphalt mixture against tidal water by conducting a simulation which involves different tidal water sources and Sulfate solutions. To evaluate the durability of the mixtures, durability indices were used. The results showed that the amount of Sulfate in tidal water has a negative impact on the mixture performance. The use of Starbit E-55 polymer asphalt can reduce the negative impact of tidal water up to 45%, although the level of the reduction in strength loss from the use of this kind of asphalt may vary depending on the location of tidal water, amount of decayed-organic/non-organic materials in tidal water, and so on.
