ABSTRACT

If someone asked the author what words she hated the most, she would respond “How cute!” This would typically seem like a compliment; however, when someone says that looking at her in her wheelchair, she feels they are undermining who she is as a person. The author has congenital muscular dystrophy and she needs assistance doing pretty much everything that requires muscular use. She says that the idea of how a person with a disability is worthless translates into their sexual lives and their sexual expression. She was constantly being told by everyone that her disability made her incapable of being sexual. Her life began changing when she started taking Women, Gender, and Sexuality classes at college, where she learned about the many different types of sexualities and the fields of study that deal with different genders such as men and masculinities. She refuses to let society tell her what her sexuality can or cannot be.
