ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author narrates how her family never understood that rape could take place even when one was fully clothed. At eighteen, when she was raped, she felt it was her fault she lost her virginity to someone she did not know. Her views on virginity and Jesus were forever altered. It was in second year of college started, she found a few of her sorority sisters, who made her feel as if it was not her fault after all. When her mother eventually came to know, she was surprisingly understanding and made her participate in Project Unbreakable, a blog that features survivors of sexual violence holding poster boards with the words their perpetrator had said to them. The reaction was huge and positive. One UVA deans also shared resources that could help upon her return to campus. There was a video made by her dance team in her honor to raise awareness about sexual assault.
