ABSTRACT

The useless information from 5th grade sex education that “the vagina is a self-cleaning oven so douching is not necessary” did nothing to prepare the author. Her parents’ additional attempts at sex seminars and the book called Where Did I Come From left her with the impression that something called sperm had a mind of its own. She had been careful not to get pregnant too early, but when she wanted to have babies, she had conception problems. After vitro fertilization, a miscarriage and further rounds to the fertility clinic, she finally delivered a baby girl. From her experience, from teaching and working with my students, she says that sex education in America needs to be better. Her advise is to be kind to those you know who may be diagnosed with infertility, even if you do not understand what they are going through.
