ABSTRACT

This chapter inspires by the conference held in Frankfurt 2018 on Indeterminate States and explores several themes, including immigration. It explores the symbols in the novel Heart of Darkness, 1899/1995 (Joseph Conrad), in search of evidence of archetypical journeys to the other side. The chapter approaches the theme of the heart of darkness through symbols as an attempt to comprehend the immigration phenomenon as an archetypical journey. The hypothesis of this investigation is that the novel may be seen as an archetypal journey to the other side; therefore, it can help us deal with and understand the immigration issues of the present. The method applied in this research is the amplification of symbols in the novel Heart of Darkness. The chapter seeks evidence of an archetypal journey to the ‘other side’ and attempts to connect it to immigration. Sociologists use the novel to learn about colonialism and to question what is called progress at that time.
