ABSTRACT

Homosexuality has become commonly acceptable in some parts of the world, while it is only towards the last lap of 20th century that India began to take up the topic to consideration. Since then, a slow but steady progress in number of initiatives taken for the community could be seen. There seems to be several other factors that are decelerating the success. It is important to investigate those factors without which any change in the status of the community can be made possible. This chapter explores the status of the LGBTQI+ community in India in the present scenario. A track on the historical background of the community’s existence in the nation has also been explored. The chapter further progresses to understand the viewpoints of the law and order, the family, the educational institutions and workplaces in dealing with the members of this community. Finally, the status of mental health of the community has been discussed drawing evidence from a global perspective. A few recommendations are proposed with the aim of upbringing the community and expanding the perspective of the society.
