ABSTRACT

A teacher’s job has changed beyond recognition over the past 30 years. The expected professionalism and expertise needed to do well within this demanding, yet immensely rewarding area of work is constantly changing. This chapter provides practical, relevant and proven strategies and constructive advice to help overcome and understand the difficulties and generational changes faced by young people. Teachers are often tempted to look for quick fixes to deal with issues and emotional problems that children and young people have, when these issues may have taken weeks, months or sometimes years in the making. The problems schools are facing all fundamentally come down to the same thing: no matter what the situation, people want to be understood, listened to and valued.
