ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides that alternative because it presents course samples that, unlike languages across the curriculum/foreign languages across the curriculum, incorporate foreign languages into a course facilitated by a language expert in a single classroom where a humanities content course is being taught. It represents a compilation of tangible examples of courses taught in English by foreign language faculty, who have intentionally incorporated elements of a foreign language in their humanities course curriculum. The book explores foreign literature in translation examined through the lens of “Crazy Love.” It offers concrete ideas about how to conceive of, prepare for, and execute a sociolinguistics course that is attractive to an audience that may not have any previous language background. The book discusses ways to analyze gendered identities in Japanese language through the examination of honorifics, sexist language, and girl-graphs.
