ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the power system perspective of the microgrid. Starting with the introduction, classification and operation, it overviews the grid integration methods of renewable energy fed microgrids. Integration of solar and wind power systems along with control of voltage, current and active/reactive power is dealt in detail in grid-tied as well as stand-alone modes of the microgrid. Modeling and design of power converter controls applicable in AC and DC microgrids are dealt here. While linear control in grid-tied voltage source inverters is elaborated, non-linear control methods are reviewed. Maximum power point tracking in both solar photovoltaic and wind turbine driven generator systems has been presented separately. Cases of operation off the peak power point are also discussed. Power quality and islanding detection are the last topics discussed.
