ABSTRACT

Migration became one of the most important issues in Hungarian public debates between the summer of 2015 and 2017. Multiple and conflicting narratives contributed to a sense of crisis. The dominant political narratives involved the importance of Christianity as part of the cultural identity of the country, to which migration posed a considerable threat. In this chapter, the focus is to identify and analyse the similarities between the dominant narratives of the Christian churches and their representatives, and the political narratives published in Hungarian online news. A discursive approach was used in order to detect power relations among the actors. The results showed that there is a resemblance of narratives, however various counter and parallel ones also existed but were obscured by mainstream online media. The analysis showed asymmetric power relations on a discursive level between Christian churches and the current government.
