ABSTRACT

This work focused on the design of composite product. The product developed is crutches. The composite crutches were developed using total design method. Market investigation was initially carried out distributing the questionnaire to 178 respondents around Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang, Selangor. Then product design specification (PDS) was developed based on the results and analysis from market investigation. Three design concepts were developed using several design tools such as concept map, functional decomposition, biomimetic and morphological chart. All concept designs were evaluated using Pugh selection method based on the criteria that were obtained from the questionnaires and PDS. The selected concept was further developed in detail design in the form of engineering drawings by using Catia v5 software. Based on this work, it can be concluded that approach of total design method could assist designers to systematically design a bio-based product according to the process flow in each stage.
