ABSTRACT

Despite combination therapy for the management of tuberculosis (TB), the disease is still a huge challenge to the society. The emergence of multidrug-resistant strains has now threatened the scientific community across the globe and therefore new therapies are urgently needed. Since ancient times, phytochemicals have been the basis of almost all therapeutics and, even today, natural products are still entering clinical trials as well as providing new avenues for biocompounds against TB. Flavonoids are most attractive for anti-mycobacterial drugs because of the rich chemical diversity and antibacterial activity. Furthermore, many fruits and vegetables are rich in flavonoids, whose consumption can be considered as relatively safe. Several flavonoids (such as catechin, epigallocatechin gallate, quercetin, naringenin, etc.) are highly effective against TB.
