ABSTRACT

Rhodiola is a perennial plant with a fleshy caudex, crowned with leaves and a broad clasping base often reduced to membranous or semi-orbicular scales from the axils of which leafy flowering-shoots are produced. There are approximately 23 species of Rhodiola, which are distributed in the Himalaya region. Rhodiola imbricata is used to treat various epidemic diseases, traumatic injuries and burns, edema of legs, and for eliminating toxins from the body. Besides these activities, it can reduce the effects of anoxia and fatigue. It can also provide beneficial effects against various neurological disorders. This chapter reviews the morphometry, phytochemical profiling, and traditional usage of Rhodiola plant in the Himalaya region.
