ABSTRACT

Large-scale complex technological systems have become a critical part of industrial, manufacturing, transportation, telecommunication, and computer systems. Usually the behaviour of such systems reveals uncertainty and thus scientific, research and engineering communities have adopted powerful stochastic modelling tools to capture and study this behaviour and examine how to optimize these measures. The expansion of their use has indicated the need for cautious design as well as the improvement of their dependability and performance. The chapter considers series systems consisting of k components. In a series system configuration, the entire system’s operation depends on the successive operation of all components that are connected in series. A failure of at least one component incurs a system failure. Opportunistic maintenance (OM) plays an important role in current advances in dependability and performance optimization of series industrial or manufacturing systems. In order to improve the examined series system’s dependability and performance, OM is proposed for the deteriorated system’s components.
