ABSTRACT

LYONDELL has developed a family of novel non-isocyanate resins. These resins are polyuretidione polyurethanes that are designed to have low solution viscosities for meeting the demands of high solids coatings technologies. These resins have high functionality – in the range of 3 to 4 – yielding high performance polyurethane coatings when formulated with typical polyol resins in high solids, solvent-borne 2K and pseudo-IK formulations. The resulting coatings have the excellent appearance, mechanical performance and chemical resistance of conventional isocyanate based 2K urethane systems. This paper will describe the processing conditions, including catalysis and bake temperature, used to achieve the ultimate performance of these curatives in formulations as well as their application to a number of plastic substrates.
