Extinction and the variability of populations

Generalized Linear Mixed Models are introduced as a way of estimating the percentage of a species’ population that is in local decline. A technique is described so that, if this is high, an estimate can be calculated of the amount of time till a certain percentage of the population is below some critical local density. These techniques are illustrated using 2 moth species from the Rothamsted Insect Survey.
