Individual and Community in the Middle Ages: Halakhic Theory

The subject of the present discussion is the relation of the individual to the community in Jewish public law during the Middle Ages. What I would like to examine is the nature of the authority of the community over the individual, its sources and its limitations; and, from the point of view of the individual, what is the nature of his relationship to the community; what is the basis of his willingness to accept its rule; how does he view himself as part of the whole?
