ABSTRACT
The duke was a grandson of Queen Victoria, an utterly stupid gentleman, who in 1914 because of his English origin made a particular display of German nationalism. Quantitatively the most important branch of legal activity was the alimony suits, since most of those girls had illegitimate children. The main defense of the defendant was that the girl had had sexual intercourse with someone else during the period in which she was likely to have conceived. A lawyer in Kansas City gave me a case on which to write a brief. It was on the interpretation of the wage and hour law which had just been passed. Enormous efforts were being made to revise the Covenant of the League of Nations to make sure that war would reoccur. The head of the institute was a professor by the name of Antonio de Luna, and he became one of my closest friends.
