ABSTRACT

When planning for effective lessons and learning opportunities in primary school physical education, there are many teaching style choices available for generalist trained (GT) school teachers. Developing a thorough knowledge about the influence that the choice of teaching style can have on the learning process is critically important for teachers as they consider the learning environment they intend to foster. As GT primary teachers are immersed in a teaching world that encompasses a multitude of venues and subject areas and not just the gymnasium and the teaching of physical education, it can be overwhelming to fully understand, implement, and reflect on teaching style frameworks. This chapter presents The Teaching Continuum, an interpretation of the theoretical understanding surrounding teaching style models with particular focus on The Spectrum in order to resonate with GT teachers as they consider their choice of teaching style to support their teacher efficacy.
