ABSTRACT

To find the safe and economical route of coastal ships, not only fuel oil consumption, but also the risk of grounding should be taken into consideration. This paper proposed an optimization method for the most economical route planning while avoiding grounding near coast. A modified A* algorithm was utilized to search the route in real space considering grounding risk. Under keel clearance (UKC) method was utilized to avoid grounding, and this method was investigated using the ocean depth information from electronic navigational chart. An optimization method with sequential quadratic programming was performed in order to compute the efficiency of ship operation by applying ISO 15016 with available weather information such as wind, wave and current. This paper computed the optimal route considering the ocean environment and grounding between two specific ports. As a results, the efficiency and the safety were compared between the proposed route and the past route.
