Introduction

This introduction provides a survey of significant changes and enduring continuities in American higher education and introduces the historical cases that are explored in this book. The purpose of the survey and the cases that follow is to illuminate how higher education has confronted social, economic, and political change in the past, how reform movements were created, contested, and implemented, and how college processes, purposes, and structures were transformed across space and time.
