ABSTRACT

Details and describes the career transition issues facing the American working class as the economy shifts from manufacturing to new technologies and service sector jobs in the 1990’s. Descriptions of displaced workers and adults involved in intentional change are presented. Career counseling strategies utilized with blue collar males are presented. A philosophical and pragmatic basis for using the public library as an adult career resource center is described with discussion of counseling techniques and library resources for proactive change. Focus is on the experiences of the Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Public Library’s InfoPLACE Adult Career Resource Center.
