ABSTRACT

The relationship between the American National Standard for Information Sciences – Serial Holdings Statements (ANSI Z39.44-1986) and the USMARC Format for Holdings and Locations is identical to that of Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition (AACR2) and the various MARC formats for bibliographic information. The standard on serial holdings statements and AACR2 define the requirements for identifying, recording, and displaying holdings and bibliographic data. Neither Serial Holdings Statements nor AACR2 in any way addresses the machine storage of those data. On the other hand, the USMARC Format for Holdings and Locations and the MARC formats for bibliographic information provide only for the machine storage of the content designation of holdings, location, and bibliographic data. They do not concern themselves at all with the display of holdings or bibliographic data for the end user.
